My first building assembled in years. July 31, 2007

I sat down the other day for a few hours and built the first building I have done in years.  I have to make several buildings for the layout soon so I wanted to get a little practice before diving in.  I painted and weathered the building first then assembled it ensuring all flashing was filed off and that the walls were square.  I think it came out not too bad at all.  Once I find a place for it, I will detail the surroundings as right now it is just sitting in the room.  I would love some feedback on ways I could improve the weathering as I have not had a lot of experience in weathering buildings yet.

The start of scenery on the railroad July 31, 2007

Finally I have some scenery started. Mind you it is pretty white right now but it is a start. I use Durabond 90 for my plaster material as it is generous for play time as it sets up in approximately 90 minutes. Although I make small batches that last no longer than 20 minutes as it starts to thicken and becomes more difficult to work with. I create a frame with thin flexible cardboard strips and us utter wipes rather than paper towels as they are much stronger and do not tear easily but still soft enough for easy forming. Once the toweling layer has had a full day to dry, I go over the same area with a slightly thicker coat and a brush and stipple the area to create texture and to remove any other brush or towel marks. This will allow the coloring to blend in and the surface will look natural. I will get into more detail on the coloring and ground textures on the next post once I have a few areas on the layout done to photograph.

Here is a shots of the east end of Gainesville with the base plaster done.

I have covered the rest of the Gainesville with newspaper and covered the walls as to not get plaster on areas it doesn’t belong. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Railroading has taken a little bit of a back seat in the past few months due to an overwhelming work load and personal business. I operate a large camera, photofinishing store and this is our busy season.

Now that I have everything caught up in the store I can attend to the railroad more. I am way behind in posting progress images as I started some scenery back in May. I have also completed the first small industrial town on the branch line East of my main town and installed more facial boards so things are starting to look good. Right now I am building a few test buildings and painting/weathering them before I tackle my background buildings.

Also I have come up finally a few names for the towns. I am tired of names town #1, town #2, etc…. Here are a few names I am throwing around. They are in the order that they are on the layout from west to east. Let me know what you think or if you have any other good railroad town names. Mapquest is a great resource for this I found.

Gainesville

Stone Valley

Woodshill

Holden

Walton

Clifton

I will post some images shortly with my progress.
