A small town water tower October 28, 2007

I had a small space designated in Gainesville for a water tower but was having a hard time finding one suitable in style and size. I went to a train show last weekend and low and behold to my surprise I found two small water towers that must have belonged to an industrial building. At $2 a piece I took them both and figured that one way or another I will get them to work. Both needed a lot of work but I picked the best one and clean it up. Some filing and repair work was all it took. Since these were industrial tanks I had to convert them to a railroad older style water tower by adding a few parts. Lucky I had a few scrap water towers in a box that had the parts I was looking for. I added a water guage, spout, and counter weights and gave it a good paint job with some rusting and weathering details and it was done in an couple hours in between other jobs. The results look great. Here is a before and after image and a few with the water town installed in its new home.

One of the details in this scene is a very realistic picnic table pictured below that only took about 15 minutes to build and weather but adds a nice place for the workers to rest.

I should have the Heritage Furniture factory installed within a few days. I have it assembled, painted, weathered. I even have a smoke stack that I am adding to this building as they will be burning their own sawdust to generate power and heat to the building. Now all I am waiting for is the ground work to dry around the building and then I can paint the rails and glue in the building. Here is a preview of the smoke stack. I will do a full posting as soon as it is done.

Wow! Just happened to find the link to this model railroading page. I’ve been looking for a water tower and a smoke stack for my layout and see your work-in-progress photos. Have any suggestions on where to look for a smoke stack kit like the one shown here??
Thanks for your comments. The smoke stack is a Walters CornerStone 1 piece kit. I liked it because there are no seems to hide but I did spend some time weathering it and detailing it though. The water tower was scratch built. I used a water tower from an industrial building and painted it, weathered it and used parts from another water tower that I have been using for parts. Let me know if you want any more details.
Thanks again and I hope to be getting more railroading done soon a I just returned from CES in Vegas.
